Sleek & Smooth: The Ultimate Guide to Laser Hair Removal – Say Goodbye to Razors

Here's how it works:

All the different lasers you hear about all have one thing in common. Lasers emit light energy. How deep that light energy travels is what separates one kind of laser from another. For the sake of simplicity we are going to focus on one type of laser today and it is the one that is most often used for Hair Removal.

  • Selective Absorption:

    • Lasers used for hair removal have a longer wavelength of light so, that it can penetrate the bulb of the hair follicle.

    • For laser hair removal, the laser is looking for melanin... or pigment in the hair follicle.

  • Conversion of Light to Heat:

    • When the laser light is absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle, it is converted into heat.

    • This heat cauterizes blood supply to the hair follicle, therefore preventing future hair growth from occurring.

  • Selective Destruction of Hair Follicles:

    • The goal is to selectively damage the hair follicles without causing significant harm to the surrounding skin.

    • The laser targets dark, coarse hair while sparing the surrounding lighter skin.

  • Multiple Sessions for Effective Results:

    • Hair grows in cycles, and laser hair removal is most effective on actively growing hair.

    • Since hair follicles go through different phases (anagen, catagen, and telogen), multiple sessions are usually required to catch all the follicles in the correct growth phase.

  • Contraindications:

    • Pregnancy

    • Recent use of Accutane (must be off of medication for 6 months or more)

    • Recent malignancy of cancer

    • Use of photosensitive medication like antibiotics.

    • Recent sun tan or burn

It's important to note that laser hair removal is more effective for individuals with a significant contrast between the color of their hair and skin. People with light skin and dark hair tend to respond best to the treatment.

While, laser hair removal can lead to long-lasting hair reduction, it may not result in permanent hair removal. Some maintenance sessions may be required over time to address any regrowth.
